A Bittersweet Week at the Austrian International Amateur Championships 2026
From May 8–10, 2026, I had the opportunity to compete in the Austrian International Amateur Championships at the stunning Golfclub Fontana just south of Vienna. Despite the disappointing sporting outcome, the tournament was an unforgettable experience and one that offered valuable lessons both on and off the course.
Golfclub Fontana is without question one of the most impressive golf venues I have ever played. The course, which previously hosted events on the European Tour (6700m / CR 77,1), was presented in absolutely immaculate condition. Every detail reflected the highest professional standards — from the perfectly manicured fairways to the extremely fast and demanding greens. Playing on a course maintained at such an elite level was a true privilege and something every competitive golfer appreciates deeply.
At the same time, the championship itself proved to be a very challenging test. Against an exceptionally strong international field, I unfortunately missed the cut. While that was obviously disappointing, it also reflected the phase I am currently going through in my game. I am in the middle of an important swing change that I believe is necessary to reach a consistently high level in the long term. Competing while making technical adjustments is never easy, especially in a tournament where every small mistake is punished immediately.
Still, the week in Austria provided tremendous value. It was a reminder of the incredibly high standard required to compete with the world’s best amateur players and an opportunity to gain experience under demanding conditions. Even though the result was bittersweet, the tournament strengthened my motivation to continue working patiently on the process, trusting that the improvements will pay off over time.
